The 2011 BMW Z4 sDrive35is debuts next month at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show. The BMW's N54 direct-injected, twin-turbocharged inline-6 remains in the 2011 Z4 sDrive35is, but engineers have increased airflow while simultaneously cranking up boost pressure. As such, the engine graduates from the 300/300 horsepower/torque club to 335 hp at 5,900 rpm and 332 lb-ft of torque from 1,500-4,500 rpm. And on the overboost, torque rises to 369 lb-ft, according to BMW.

The latest Z4 model is characterized by instantaneous response to the accelerator pedal, fantastic sounds, and a free-revving spirit. The new Z4 sDrive35is is faster and better than any other model in the Z4 line-up: powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six with increased air flow and more boost pressure.The result is an output of 335 HP at 5,900 RPM and a peak torque of 332 lb-ft from 1,500 RPM to 4,500 RPM. The sprint from 0 to 60 MPH is made in just 4.7 seconds, while the car’s top speed is limited to 155 MPH. The engine is mated to a 7 speed Double-Clutch Transmission with SPORT and SPORT+ modes for crisper shifts and more performance driving.

Now, the new BMW Z4 sDrive35is distills the Roadster’s performance potential to produce one of BMW’s fastest and best-handling Roadsters ever. The BMW Z4 sDrive35is is making its world debut as a 2011 model at the 2010 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. It arrives at authorized BMW Centers in Spring 2010.

The enhanced engine management system of the Z4 sDrive35is also includes an electronically-controlled overboost function to briefly increase torque under full load by another 37 pound-feet. This temporary torque peak of 369 pound-feet gives the car a significant increase in acceleration.

The Z4 sDrive35is borrows the M Aerodynamics and adaptive M Suspension from the larger cars. The new Z4 rides on lightweight 18 inch five spoke alloy wheels, a striking front bumper with a matte aluminum trim bar in each outer air intake, a rear bumper with accentuated surrounds on the tailpipes, and a rear diffuser finished at top in body color and black textured surface underneath. On the interior BMW added a new M leather steering wheel with gearshift paddles, an M driver’s footrest, and sport seats.

We've noted that the Z4 sDrive 35i is aless frenetic car to back roads than its earlier Z4 (and Z3) predecessors) with a predictible, stable character that makes it easy to build up to a quick pace. However, we hope we're reading BMW right in guessing that company engineers tried to go a little edgier with the chassis calibrations for the sDrive35is. Notably,The Electric Power Steering (EPS) on the BMW Z4 sDrive35is features very sporty programming, focused to provide intense and clear steering feedback to the driver. This enables the driver to turn-in with remarkable precision and confidence at all vehicle speeds.

The new Mazda3 sedan is the most daring example yet of the Japanese automaker's, guess why? Because Los Angeles, California – In some ways, successful vehicles are more difficult to redesign than unpopular ones. The Mazda3 sedan received a complete overhaul for the 2010 model year and representing what is perhaps in a car.

Japanese automaker’s Mazda’s chief designer Laurens van den Acker has said, “The new Mazda3 showcases a styling direction that will eventually spread to the entire Mazda lineup”.

The length of new model Mazda3 Sedan is now 180.9 inches (up 3.5 inches), while width is 69.1 inches, height is 57.9 inches, and wheelbase remains 103.9 inches. A rubber-isolated subframe up front supports the entire power train, the rack-and-pinion steering system, and the lower attachments of the coil spring MacPherson strut suspension. The independent multi-link rear suspension also uses coil springs with one trailing arm, two lateral links, and one toe-control link per side.

Also the braking system of Mazda3 has been improved with a new vacuum booster which provides a more responsive feel to light pedal efforts.

The new mazda3 Sedan equipped with 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine delivers 148 horsepower at 6500 rpm and 135 pound-feet of torque at 4,500 rpm. Aluminum block and head construction saves weight, while dual overhead camshafts improve efficiency and performance. Fuel economy for the 2.0-liter is estimated a 25 mpg in the city for manual transmission and 24 mpg with the automatic. Highway mileage with the 2.0-liter engine is 33 mpg with either transmission.

Inside the new Mazda3 a wrap-around dash top is remain which is similar to that used on the Honda Civic, it also contains radio and climate control information, as well as a small optional navigation screen. The luxury quota is way up - Mazda says that it wanted to give buyers a reason to step out of larger, less efficient cars into the Mazda3, so it upped content substantially. Class-first features like driver's seat memory, steering-linked Xenon headlamps and dual-zone automatic climate control are all optional on the Mazda3.

The automaker says that one in three Mazdas sold across the globe is a Mazda3 and, unlike the new Mazda6, the smaller car is almost identical in North American specification to the one sold elsewhere.

The Ford F150
Some people, particularly farmers and other rural residents (not to mention Massachusetts' new Senator-elect Scott Brown) simply won't drive anything other than a pickup truck. The one model that experts at Consumer Reports, Kelley and the Insurance Institute all agree on is the Ford F150, which scored high in rollover survivability tests, is tops. "Good brakes," Quincy added.

Caveats and Honorable Mentions
Quincy, like other automotive experts, stressed the difficulty of trying to pick the singularly safest cars, pointing to the growing parity among automakers in technological innovations. He offered numerous other candidates for car buyers to consider, while also taking issue with the presumption that Volvo has cornered the market on superior safety. "There are plenty of car companies that have just as much or more safety equipment than Volvo," Quincy said.
Among the other vehicles Quincy viewed as among the safest, across categories and in no particular order: Audi A6, Acura RL, Volkswagon Golf, and three pickup trucks, the Toyota Tundra, Toyota Tacoma and the Honda Ridgeline.

The Ferrari 458 Italia is a mid-engined sports car to be produced by the Italian sports car manufacturer Ferrari, as the replacement for the Ferrari F430.
Ferrari has not announced a price or even the start-date for production, but the 458 Italia was officially unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show on15 September 2009. However, there have been sightings of the car in Switzerland and the Netherlands.

It replaces the outgoing F430… and, judging by the numbers, it's going to be simply astonishing.

First, the engine: a new 4.5-litre direct injection V8 putting out – ready for this? – 420kW. That’s 58kW more than the current F430, and 38kW more than the Scuderia.

325km/h fast, in fact. And a 0-100km/h time of ‘less than 3.4 seconds’. That is unbelievably quick: the F430 hits 100km/h in four seconds flat, and even the Scud can only manage a three-point-six. In fact, it’s even faster than an Enzo.

Wow. If you've ever been lucky enough to drive a 430 Scuderia and thought you'd reached motoring nirvana, then I'm afraid the world has just moved on. The Ferrari 458 Italia makes that car very old school...

The latest all-new Ferrari is the most useable yet - a racer for the road but with more than a nod in the direction of GT talents as well. To that end, there's a dual-clutch gearbox as standard, complete with full auto mode, as well as adaptive damping, a 4.5-litre V8 which revs to 9,000rpm and produces 570bhp and 398lb ft, a steering rack with two turns lock to lock, plus the usual electronic trick diff.

Suffice to say, it's neither slow nor boring. The noise is epic (we found a long tunnel and it sounded like we were sat slap bang in the middle of an F1 car because the exhaust baffles open at 2,500rpm) and the way the pace builds through all the gear changes is far too addictive to be legal. These are seriously quick up and down shifts, although not quite as mechanical and brutal as the F1 gearbox on the Scuderia.

But the single best thing about this 458 is that it's not intimidating. Switch the adaptive damping to the Bumpy Road' setting and there isn't a supercar out there which rides as well. And because everything is so intuitive - from the steering to the gearbox, even the satnav controls - you feel immediately at home in it. Nothing shocks, nothing surprises.

The whole thing feels modern. If we're going to be honest, the Scuderia wore its technology rather reluctantly. But the 458 has been designed with it from the outset, so even the satnav now feels like a proper satnav system, not some botched after-market thought.

Perhaps the greatest compliment we can pay the 458 is that it no longer feels like it needs a Challenge Stradale or Scuderia version. The 458 does it all. And does it bloody well.

From two-seat convertibles to sport-utility vehicles, family sedans and minivans, a wide range of new vehicles can be purchased for that price or less. Chevrolet's hot-selling 2010 Camaro LT muscle car costs $23,880. It comes with air conditioning, power-operated windows, locks and seats, a CD player and a 304-horsepower engine. It isn't the most powerful version of the car or the most luxurious, but it looks sharp and gets attention.

A Honda Accord EX sedan with a four-cylinder engine and automatic transmission costs $24,630. A well-equipped diesel-powered Volkswagen Jetta station wagon that gets 41 miles per gallon costs $24,615. Toyota's mid-level Prius hybrid goes for $23,800.

People perceive $25,000 as a price they can manage, analysts say -- without having to settle for a low-end car such as a Hyundai Accent Blue ($9,970) or a Chevrolet Aveo ($11,965). Car makers, facing a prolonged sales slump, are trying to keep prices below that perceived sweet spot in order to lure recession-weary consumers.

Subaru sells most of its cars for just under $25,000, spokesman Michael McHale says. The auto maker lowered the price of its top-of-the line 2010 Outback by $1,100, in part to help keep the model's average price down.

Crucially, at $25,000, buyers can keep monthly car payments between $400 and $500 on a four-year loan with an interest rate of 6.56% and a down payment, trade-in or combination equal to 20% of the sticker price, according to Bankrate.com. Lower-cost loans are more important for buyers than in the recent past because lease offers have been cut back substantially and are harder to find.

Often, a $25,000 sticker gets customers into showrooms, where dealers assume buyers will wind up spending closer to $30,000 after adding options, tax, and registration and document fees, car companies and industry analysts say. "If you want to end up paying $25,000, you should start with a car in the low 20s," says Philip Reed, senior consumer advice editor for, a market-research Web site.

The sweet spot itself keeps rising. A decade ago, consumers searched for cars for less than $20,000 -- a price that allowed you to get a mid-range Honda Accord, a low-end Ford Explorer or a Camaro, but not an entry-level BMW.

Of course, there are things a driver must give up with the typical $25,000 car, including leather seats, navigation systems and eight-cylinder engines. A full-size pickup truck is available for well below $25,000, but not the family-friendly four-door model. Seven- or eight-passenger minivan: yes. Rear-seat DVD screens: no.

The CTS sedan has been a great success for Cadillac, garnering much praise from the automotive media. So it's no wonder that the 2010 Cadillac SRX leans heavily on the same cabin tech and bold design features that made the CTS so popular. In many ways, the new SRX looks like the CTS on stilts.

Like CTS Cadillac SRX has the same LCD that partially stows itself in the dash, leaving a strip visible to show audio information. There was the hard-drive-based navigation system with traffic. The car even comes with the record button that saves radio broadcasts, essentially it works like TiVo for radio.

In Cadillac SRX, Cadillac added a round, color information display to the speedometer that shows a variety of information--such as the trip computer, navigation directions, and even the speed limit of the current road. When starting the SRX, an animation of the Cadillac logo rolls into place, adding a little special effects glory for this high-tech cruiser.

Despite experiencing one of the most turbulent years ever in the automotive market, Chevrolet, Ford, and Subaru have benefited from a dramatic increase in overall brand perception among car owners. According to Consumer Reports 2010 Car Brand Perception Survey, all three saw at least a 30-point increase in their overall perception scores over last year's scores. The scores reflect how consumers perceive each brand in seven categories: Safety, quality, value, performance, design/style, technology/innovation, and environmentally friendly/green.
The scores reflect consumers' total perception level of a brand across those categories, and not the actual qualities of the brand's individual vehicles.

Toyota its Number one spot. But overall score improvements helped Ford slip past Honda second place and allowed Chevrolet to rise to fourth place, from ninth. Subaru's-point increase, which was the largest of any brand and almost double its 2009 score, boosted the brand to ninth place, from last year's 18th position.

The Consumer Reports National Research Center conducted a random, nationwide telephone survey Dec. 3-7, 2009, contacting 2,017 adults. The Center collected the survey data from 1,752 adults in households that had at least one car.

How are the Green Ratings derived?

Automobiles degrade the environment in many ways. Because vehicles stay on the road a long time, the largest effects occur during driving. Pollution also occurs when vehicles and their parts are manufactured, and again when a vehicle is scrapped at the end of its life.

A vehicle's total environmental impact

A scientific method for adding up all of the environmental damages associated with a product is known as life cycle assessment. The Green Ratings were developed following principles of life cycle assessment, using publicly available information to evaluate all vehicles uniformly. Thus, the ratings represent "apples-to-apples" comparisons between different makes and models. The Green Ratings rely on government-certified data and do not consider marketing assertions, "promises," or other unverifiable claims about environmental friendliness.

Major pollutants covered in the ratings include:

Greenhouse gases, primarily carbon dioxide (CO2)
Fine particles (particulate matter, PM)
Nitrogen oxides (NOx)
Hydrocarbons (HC)
Carbon monoxide (CO)

These pollutants are emitted from tailpipes as well as during the production and distribution of fuel. Environmental impacts from auto manufacturing are incorporated by basing part of the Green Rating's derivation on a vehicle's weight.

Scientists evaluate car pollution in two broad categories: greenhouse gases that cause global warming (such as CO2) and emissions that directly harm human health (such as PM, NOx, HC and CO). The Green Rating gives equal importance to these two categories. A vehicle's global warming pollution depends largely on fuel consumption, so it is calculated from fuel economy data. A vehicle's health-harming pollution depends largely on the emissions standard that it meets, which forms the basis for that part of the calculation. In others words, a "green" vehicle is one that is both clean and fuel-efficient.

The data behind the ratings

The data used to derive the Green Ratings are a vehicle's official fuel economy numbers and emissions standards as certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), plus curb weight. Fuel economy and emissions information comes from tests performed by automakers and accepted by the EPA, with a vehicle subject to recall, penalty or withholding of the certification required for legal sale in the United States if the data are found to be false or misleading. Thus, Green Ratings are based on the most accurate and unassailable data available for all cars and light trucks, ensuring fair comparisons among competing models.

Because of concerns that the EPA miles-per-gallon (MPG) numbers overstate the fuel economy that most consumers experience, the agency is updating the way fuel economy ratings are determined. Revised MPG numbers are planned for model year 2008. Pending EPA's revisions, the Green Rating calculations adjust the fuel economy numbers downward. Because the adjustment is applied across the board, it does not bias comparisons among vehicles or types of vehicles relative to the official EPA numbers. This adjustment will be dropped in future model years once revised MPG data become available.

The Green Rating rates just the vehicle, not how you use it

In interpreting the Green Ratings, keep in mind that they are intended strictly for vehicle-to-vehicle comparisons. For example, a vehicle's Green Rating does not improve if you carry four passengers in it instead of just yourself, even though the per-person environmental impact will clearly decrease. Similarly, the Green Rating doesn't go down if you drive aggressively, even though the environmental damage due to your driving goes up.

To enable fair comparisons among vehicles regardless of how they are used, the Green Ratings are based on uniform assumptions about how far the vehicle is driven over its lifetime and good maintenance practices. Your own effect on the planet when using a car, of course, depends on how you drive, how well you maintain the vehicle, and how many miles you drive it.

Unless a vehicle is designed for exclusive use on a particular fuel (such as a car that runs only on natural gas, like the Honda Civic GX), its Green Rating is based on commonly available motor fuel (gasoline or diesel). While Green Ratings are designed for fair comparisons among vehicles in the showroom, you might reduce your own vehicle's pollution by using an alternative fuel. For example, a flexible-fuel vehicle able to run on E85 (a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline) can have lower greenhouse gas emissions when using E85 rather than gasoline. Similarly, biodiesel can emit less global warming pollution than regular diesel produced from petroleum.

Because most of today's biofuels were not originally developed to solve global warming, their greenhouse gas reductions vary. Farmers and refiners are working on new ways to produce cleaner fuels that will provide greater climate-protection benefits as time goes on. Consumers should stay tuned.

Greenhouse gases

Greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide (CO2) and other emissions from the production and use of fossil fuels as well as deforestation. These global warming pollutants are accumulating in the atmosphere and causing the Earth to heat up at an unprecedented rate. Global warming brings many dangers and its consequences are already being felt. Glaciers and mountain snow packs are melting. Sea ice is thinning. Many communities will experience more sweltering days. Hazards from extreme weather events, such as intense hurricanes, are rising -- as is sea level, which heightens the impact of coastal storms and risks human tragedies and economic ruin for the many population centers located near a shoreline. Other dangers of global warming include spread of tropical diseases, destruction of habitat and disruptions to forestry and agriculture, bleaching of coral reefs, and adverse impacts on wildlife and fisheries.

Fine particles

Also called particulate matter (PM) and sometimes "soot," fine particles from car and truck fuel combustion are generally invisible. Many are so small they are labeled "ultra-fine." Fine particles are an especially deadly form of air pollution that can affect breathing, aggravate existing respiratory and cardiovascular disease, weaken the body's immune defenses, and contribute to cancer and premature death. Fine particles are especially hazardous for children, the elderly, asthmatics and people with cardiovascular or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Nitrogen oxides

Nitrogen oxides (NOx) are harmful in many ways. In addition to being a direct irritant, NOx are key contributors to ozone smog, which damages lung tissue, worsens asthma, and recently has been found to increase the risk of premature death. Smog alerts bring health risks not only for people with asthma and other conditions that make them sensitive to air pollution, but even for normally healthy adults and children who can experience lung inflammation and shortness of breath if they are active in smoggy air. NOx contributes to fine particle pollution, with its dangers as noted above, and is also a cause of acid rain.

Hydrocarbons

There are many kinds of hydrocarbons (HC), and the hazardous ones emitted by cars fall into categories known as "volatile organic compounds" or "reactive organic gases." These pollutants are another key contributor to ozone smog, bringing all of the health dangers noted above for NOx. Some forms of HC directly irritate the lungs; many contribute to fine particle pollution and some hydrocarbons are also air toxics, including compounds having known cancer risks.

Carbon monoxide

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a poisonous gas that is deadly in high concentrations, notorious for sometimes killing people who leave a vehicle running in a closed garage, for example. CO is colorless and odorless, and when inhaled, it impairs the blood's ability to supply oxygen to the body. Even short of fatal exposures, exposure to too much CO can cause physical, mental and visual impairment and presents grave risks to individuals who have cardiovascular disease.

DETROIT (AP) -- The world's cheapest car is being readied for sale in the U.S., but by the time India's Tata Nano is retrofitted to meet emissions and safety standards, it won't be that cheap.

NEW DELHI - India's Tata Motors on Thursday 10th January 2007 unveiled the world's cheapest car, bringing new mobility within the reach of tens of millions of people and nightmares to environmentalists, traffic engineers and safety advocates

Tata Technologies Ltd., the global engineering arm of the Tata group conglomerate, brought the tiny car to Detroit as a publicity stunt for the engineering group.

The car has a fuel efficiency of around 26 kilometres per litre (73 mpg-imp; 61 mpg-US) on the highway and around 22 kilometres per litre (62 mpg-imp; 52 mpg-US) in the city.

Tata officials, while maintaining that they couldn't speak for Tata Motors, maker of the $2,500 Nano, said they were involved with the Nano from concept until it launched last July in Mumbai.

They wouldn't say when the Nano might arrive in the U.S. or how much it might cost here, although Ratan Tata, chairman of the group of Tata companies, has said it should be ready for U.S. distribution in about three years.

"Nano" means "small" in Gujrati, the language of the founders of the Tata Group."Nano" from the SI Prefix for one-billionth is derived from the Greek νᾶνος, meaning dwarf, and is sometimes used to mean "small" in colloquial English.

Tata Motors already has made a European version of the four-seat car that will cost about $8,000 when it debuts in 2011, and a Tata Technologies official said privately that the U.S. version is expected to have a comparable price. The official did not want to be identified because the price has not been made public.

Warren Harris, Tata Technologies president, would only say that the price would be more than the roughly $2,500 charged in India.

"The structural changes that would need to be made, the changes that would be required as far as emissions are concerned, and some of the features that would be appropriate to add to the vehicle for the North American market, obviously that would drive up the price point," he said.

Tata Technologies could be involved in bringing the car up to U.S. standards, said Tony Jones, associate vice president of the global automotive practice.

Before it can be sold here, the car's two-cylinder, 623cc engine would have to be engineered to meet stronger U.S. pollution standards, he said. Airbags would have to be added, the roof strengthened and the front bumper lengthened to meet U.S. requirements to limit damage in a 5-mph crash.

The Spartan interior, with flat bucket seats, three knobs, a horizontal switch and a steering wheel, also would have to be changed to comply with U.S. safety standards that limit movement of passengers not wearing seat belts.

The Nano has 21% more interior space (albeit mostly as headroom, due to its tall stance) and an 8% smaller exterior compared to its closest rival, the Maruti 800. Tata offered the car in three versions: the basic Tata Nano Std; the CX; and the LX. The CX and LX versions each have air conditioning, power windows, and central locking. Tata has set its initial production target at 250,000 units per year.

Jones said the Nano Europa has airbags and has passed European safety tests with flying colors.

The Nano, with 12-inch diameter tires, electric windows in the front and crank windows in the back, gets 50 mpg on the highway and has a top speed of 65 mph.

If the $8,000 price tag holds true, it would cost far less than the $9,970 Hyundai Accent, currently the car with the lowest base sticker price in the U.S., according to the Edmunds.com automotive Web site. The price excludes shipping.

In assessing the kinds of cars we will be driving in the future, only one word is needed to describe this changing automotive landscape—electricity. By the looks of cars ready for production and futuristic prototypes, battery power will play an increasingly important role. It will be used to boost the power and range of conventional powerplants, plus be used as the sole source of motivation in other applications.

Ready for production is the 2011Honda CR-Z, a fun, 2-seat sporty hatchback that incorporates the company’s electric engine assist, which is already seen in the Insight and Civic hybrids. The CR-Z harkens back to a time when Honda offered a similar car called the CRX. In addition to its smart-looking wedge shape, the Honda CR-Z is the first hybrid to offer a 6-speed manual transmission as standard equipment. With that gearbox, it is capable of returning 31 mpg city/37 mph highway, while the optional CVT transmission delivers an even better 36 city/38 highway. The CR-Z goes on sale this fall.

Exhibited by Honda at the Tokyo Motor Show 2007, the CR-Z is a next-generation lightweight sports car equipped with Honda's proprietary gas-electric hybrid system which achieves both clean performance and a high level of torque.

The CR-Z, which stands for Compact Renaissance Zero, is a design research lightweight hybrid model that features advanced technologies that deliver enjoyable driving for all while reducing the vehicle's environmental footprint. The CR-Z combines powerful performance in a compact form with a futuristic image. For its frontal view, an over-sized grill with a high-performance look is offset by openings on each side that lighten the overall feel. In the rear, tube-shaped rear combination lamps ensure better rearward visibility.

Design details emphasizing the CR-Z's advanced image include door mirrors that provide high visibility in a stylish form, LED headlights patterned after luminous bodies to convey a sharp impression, and jauntyfin-shaped sub-lights. Large, 19-inch aluminum wheels are ready for dynamic driving performance.
The key words for the CR-Z's interior design are 'Hi-tech and Sporty'. The goal was to create an all-new sporty interior that fuses the liberating feel of airy spaciousness with an advanced interface that brings out the fun of the drive.

Further out in the future is the Hyundai Blue-Will concept, a hybrid that capitalizes on the range and torque of a diesel powerplant. Equipped with a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder oil-burner, the Blue-Will puts out a combined 152 horsepower when the 100-kw electric motor is employed. Like the Toyota FT-CH, the Blue-Will is a plug-in hybrid (using a technology similar to that which will appear later this year in the Chevy Volt) that can be driven up to 40 miles on electricity alone, with no help from the diesel engine. The Blue-Will’s futuristic shape hints at a more fluid design theme being developed for Hyundai.

MUNICH -: With just a dozen German colleagues, I had a preview of the Concept ActiveE, BMWs second car that is prepared under Project-i. The ActiveE will be unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on January 11th. Under Project-i BMW is investigating the possibilities for personal transport in mega cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Mexico City, London, and Paris.

The first car that was built under Project-I is the Mini E, which was unveiled in November 2008 at the LA Auto Show. On the day prior to the unveiling, I had the opportunity to drive the Mini E in and around Beverly Hills.

So, this week, BMW took the time to inform us about Concept ActiveE. In fact, it is the follow up for the Mini E. In total more than 600 units of the electric Mini hit the roads this year for tests in New York, Los Angeles, Berlin, London and Munich.

In 2011 the ActiveE will also serve as a test bed for the electric vehicle that is due the first before 2015, according to Dr. Klaus Draeger, Member of BMW AGs Board.

No decision has been made yet in what cities the ActiveE will arrive, but the number may be about the same as that of the Mini E.

Mr. Ulrich Kranz, project leader of Project-I said that new developments in lithium-ion battery technology enabled BMW to build the ActiveE as a proper four seater. The batteries have been developed in cooperation with SB LiMotive, a joint venture between Samsung and Bosch and because of their smaller size offer better possibilities for developing a normal car.

The lithium-ion battery pack of 5,088 modules takes the space of the rear seats and trunk, but in the ActiveE, which is based on the 1-Series Coupe, the battery pack that consist now of 96 modules could be hidden under the center of the car, under the rear seats and in the front part of the trunk, leaving space for two golf bags.

Dr. Draeger said that his company has to look into the possibilities of electric mobility, especially since the world population will grow from 6.8 billion people to 8 billion by 2025. All those people will go after the standard of living that we enjoy now, which means they will want to own a car. It is added value for our company, our environment and our society, if we can reduce CO2-emissions,said Dr. Draeger. He said that there is not a single solution, or there are not separate measures for sustainable mobility by that time, but one of them is electro mobility. Sounds sensible enough!

In this field of improving fuel efficiency and reducing CO2-emissions, BMW is already leading in the premium class, thanks to its EfficientDynamics technologies that are implied across its complete fleet of cars. Dr. Draeger does not say BMW is going to build a slew of EVs by 2015, but the Bavarians want to be ready to bring an electric vehicle on the roads in big cities, want to be in the picture as a manufacturer that knows how to build a proper electric vehicle that also meets the expectations of BMW clients.

Dr. Draeger also explicitly said that BMW is definitely not cancelling its Hydrogen project that runs with the 7-Series H. But we will not build a new hydrogen vehicle and we will stick to the 7-Series. Hydrogen and especially its infrastructure have a long way to go.

Wishing upon a star or throwing a coin in a well might make dreams come true, but when it comes to fuel cell vehicles, auto industry executives are hoping that chanting in unison will turn hopes into reality. The mantra from execs: “Fuel cell cars for sale by 2015.”

In the past few weeks, Ford, Toyota and Daimler have expressed and reiterated their commitment to bringing hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicles to market in six years, with Honda pushing its target date to 2018.

The US Department of Energy announced that it will be pulling the plug on fuel cell research and development—and California is threatening to slash its spending on building a hydrogen refueling infrastructure—but automakers are holding firm to their new timeline for hydrogen.

Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche told Speigel Magazine in March that annual production of fuel cell cars will need to reach 100,000 units to be considered commercially viable, and that vehicle prices could be comparable to “premium” gasoline cars by around 2015.
Toyota.s spokesperson John Hanson said in June, “Toyota is planning to go ahead with its program in certain world markets by 2015, if not sooner.”
Speaking in June at the Edison Electric Institute conference, Ford CEO Alan Mulally saw 2015 as the date that fuel cell cars would go on sale. Mulally hedged when reminded of the US government.s cut in fuel cell research funding. “That pushes out the timeframe for commercialization,” he said.
At a recent fuel cell conference, GM.s Larry Burns also agreed with the 2015 dates, commenting: “General Motors is committed to developing a hydrogen fuel cell car despite its bankruptcy and a huge cut in (federal) research dollars for the zero-emission (hydrogen) vehicle.” Dave Barthmuss, GM's West Coast regional PR manager, said last week, “We don't need any more breakthroughs to bring the [fuel cell] cars into the commercial market by 2015."
Honda.s Steve Ellis, manager of fuel cell vehicle sales and marketing, told an audience at a National Hydrogen Association webinar in June that Honda is looking at 2018 as its magic date, but is already producing the FCX Clarity on a regular production line.

Despite repeated statements pinpointing 2015 for delivering fuel cell cars, automakrs acknowledge two major hurdles in reaching that goal: high costs and lack of infrastructure. As Andreas Truckenbrodt, chief executive of the Automotive Fuel Cell Cooperation—a Daimler-Ford venture to advance fuel cells for vehicles—said, “Fuel cells work fine. The number one focus is now on cost reductions, and we know how to get there. Do you really think we would be spending billions if we were waiting for a miracle?”

But a miracle might be required for producing and selling fuel cell cars in any significant numbers by 2015. The hydrogen-refueling infrastructure remains a distant, and extremely expensive, dream. The federal government and the State of California are both wavering on previous commitments to spend the required large sums of money on building hydrogen stations—begging the question of who will buy fuel cell cars without knowing where they will find fuel. If the US commitment to this technology wavers, auto companies may shift their focus to more markets, such as Japan and Germany.

Most industry analysts do not expect commercialization of fuel cell cars until 2020, at the earliest. As the move to plug-in cars—plug-in hybrids and electric cars—builds momentum, carmakers that have heavily invested in fuel cell technologies will feel increased pressure to justify the expense and convince their stakeholders that fuel cells are coming sooner than expected.

Ford, the only U.S.-based automaker to avoid bankruptcy protection, has fared better than its two Detroit rivals, with overall sales down 15 percent last year compared with a 36 percent drop for Crysler a 30 percent decline for GM.

Ford's final month of 2009 was strong, with a 33 percent increase in sales thanks to strong demand for mid size cars. Last year, it gained U.S. market share for the first time since 1995, helped by critical raves for its fuel-efficient cars, like the midsize Fusion. Its compact focus and popular escape crossover also boosted sales.

"We still have a long way to go ... getting the business back to healthy profitability," Fields said. "We have to channel that good feeling into our efforts for 2010."

DETROIT – Toyota unveiled a new hybrid concept car that is smaller than the Prius and geared toward younger buyers, as part of the Japanese automakers strategy to expand its lineup of hybrid and alternative-fuel vehicles.

Toyota's plans for its future hybrid offensive were announced on Monday at the Detroit auto show, beginning with a new FT-CH concept.

Toyota showed off the FT-CH compact car at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on Monday. The company also confirmed plans to badge future hybrids with the Prius name, expanding the Prius brand into an entire family of hybrid vehicles.

A production version of the FT-CH could be sold under the Prius name, Toyota said.

"The strategy is still taking shape and obviously it will require additional models to qualify as a family," said Jim Lentz, president of Toyota Motor Sales USA, a division of Toyota Motor Corp.

Toyota said the FT-CH is 22 inches shorter than the Prius and is lighter and more fuel efficient than the existing hybrid. The car was designed to appeal to younger buyers and was inspired by the retro style of early 8-bit video games popular during the 1980s, the company said.

Toyota said the car — which, as a concept vehicle, has no official time line for going on sale to the public — underscores the automaker's strategy to sell a wider variety of hybrids, battery-electric and fuel-cell vehicles over the next several years. Hybrids run alternately on batteries and gasoline.

Priuses would be marketed together to save on advertising costs, but there could be up to three models. It costs more than $100 million to launch a model name and win awareness with buyers, he said.

It also plans to offer plug-in hybrids and all-electric cars starting in model-year 2012 and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles in 2015. Toyota has not decided whether the all-electric cars will be marketed as Priuses.

"It's much more efficient to market 300,000 or 400,000 vehicles under one brand name than it is to spend the dollars to market two or three model names," he said.

Toyota said it plans to sell 1 million hybrids per year globally in the early part of this decade by launching eight new hybrids over the next few years. It also plans to offer plug-in hybrids and all-electric cars starting in model-year 2012 and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles in 2015 in its global markets.

The FT-CH, as a concept vehicle, has no official sales or production schedule.

Toyota recently launched a global demonstration program of its plug-in hybrid technology involving 600 Prius plug-ins. Starting early this year, Toyota is sending 150 plug-in Priuses powered with lithium-ion batteries — in contrast to the bulkier nickel-metal hydride batteries that currently power hybrids — to the U.S. for testing and demonstration.

Yoshi Inaba, president and chief operating officer of Toyota Motor North America, told reporters Monday he was optimistic about 2010 sales after a dismal 2009 for the automaker and the industry.

Inaba expects U.S. sales industry wide to rise to about 11.5 million this year after dropping to 10.4 million in 2009, and more growth is expected in 2011 and 2012. He predicted that Toyota's market share in the U.S. — 17 percent last year — will be steady or rise.

FYI - True Toyota suggests you burn hi-octane fuel to limit the negative effects from exhaust emissions but you can burn mid-grade or standard-grade fuel with no damage to the engine. It's an environmental issue not a mechanical issue.

The driver can disengage VSC via the 'TRAC off' switch, which can be desirable in certain situations. VDIM is standard on all IS sedan models.

EPS helps to provide linear steering response, precise control and excellent straight-line stability. The vehicle-speed-sensitive system eliminates parasitic loss from a hydraulic pump, and reduces weight and complexity.

The IS 250 and IS 350 feature a four-wheel disc brake system, with the IS 350 equipped with larger ventilated front and rear rotors. In addition, the IS 350's aluminum four-piston front calipers aid in heat dissipation and stopping power and reduce unsprung weight.

Standard all-season performance tires measure 225/45R17 in front and 245/45R17 for the rear (225/45R17 on IS 250 AWD). Available as a stand-alone option or as part of the Sport Package, summer 225/40R18 front tires and 255/40R18 rear tires reward the enthusiast driver with even higher cornering grip.

Safety/Security Features
Passive-safety technology in the Lexus IS begins with a reinforced passenger compartment that helps protect the occupants with front- and rear-crush structures. Seatbelt pre-tensioners and force limiters are used for the front and outboard rear seats.

In addition to the advanced dual-front airbags and front seat-mounted side airbags, the Lexus Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) for the IS includes side-curtain airbags that extend from A-pillar to C-pillar, and a knee airbag for both the driver and the front passenger. Advanced dual-stage front airbags are designed to deploy at one of two speeds, according to impact force. The driver's front airbag also includes an extra low stage designed to deploy based, in part, on the seat's position on its track. The front passenger airbag features two chambers, creating an indentation in the center impact area that helps to provide overall occupant protection.

The optional Pre-Collision System (PCS) can help reduce collision damage. The package includes Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, which uses millimeter-wave radar to measure and help maintain a pre-set following distance from a vehicle traveling ahead. PCS relies on the radar sensor to detect obstacles in front of the car, and a PCS computer with sensor inputs from vehicle speed, steering angle and yaw rate is designed to determine whether a collision is unavoidable. In such a situation, PCS preemptively retracts front seat belts and pre-initializes Brake Assist so that increased braking will be applied the instant the driver depresses the pedal.

The available High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps with Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS) helps to illuminate a curve as the driver steers into it. The rear back-up camera, included with the optional navigation system, automatically projects an image of what its lens can detect behind the car onto the navigation screen when the transmission is in reverse gear. To better communicate with other drivers, IS features exterior mirrors with integrated turn signals.

The optional Intuitive Park Assist (IPA) system uses ultrasonic sensors to detect objects close to the car's front and rear bumpers, alerting the driver and showing distance to objects in the multi-information display within the speedometer. When any IS model is also equipped with the optional navigation system, information on objects detected is shown in greater detail on that system's seven-inch touch screen display.

Standard amenities for the IS models include a leather-trimmed interior with 10-way power front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control with rear-seat vents and a pollen filter (plus a smog filter on IS 350), power moonroof with one-touch open/close and seven open-position settings, manual tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, all power windows with automatic up/down feature and jam protection, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror. A multi-function switch allows the driver to set an adjustable speed warning and an adjustable RPM shift light in the tachometer. When an IS model is equipped with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, the display can show a car icon with the selected following distance. When equipped with Intuitive Park Assist (IPA), the display can show a car icon with the location and distance of objects detected near the bumpers.

F-Sport Performance Accessories Available for IS
The IS 250 and IS 350 F-Sport Performance Accessories include performance enhancing parts such as 19-inch forged alloy wheels, brake upgrades, suspension systems, air intake, exhaust systems and more. F-Sport Performance Accessories by Lexus U.S.A. are engineered by Toyota Racing Development (TRD). When installed by an authorized dealer, the accessories are fully warranted for 12 months or for the balance of the new car warranty, whichever is greater.

Lexus Enform™ with Safety Connect™
The Lexus IS 250 and IS 350 offer an all-new telematics system, Lexus Enform with Safety Connect, available by subscription. Complimentary one-year trial subscriptions are included on all purchases of new Lexus vehicles equipped with these features. Both the Lexus Enform and the Safety Connect response center operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week—every day of the year.

Safety Connect, the cornerstone of the services, is available on both non-navigation and navigation-equipped IS 250 and IS 350 and offers four safety and security features: Automatic Collision Notification, Stolen Vehicle Location, Emergency Assistance Button (SOS), and Enhanced Roadside Assistance, which adds GPS data to the already included warranty-based Lexus roadside service.

Lexus Enform, available only on navigation-equipped vehicles, includes all of the Safety Connect features and builds upon them with the premium services of Destination Assist and eDestination. Destination Assist agents are available via the on-board cellular equipment and can help drivers find a specific address, a business by name, or a type of business (e.g., gas station, movie theater, etc.), and even Zagat®-rated restaurants, and then send the coordinates to the navigation system for routing. With eDestination, drivers can go online via LexusDrivers.com to save and sort destinations in up to 20 folders, each holding as many as 10 destinations. Then drivers can send the locations—up to 200 at a time—to their vehicle, where they will be available for download into the navigation system. Online, drivers can create personalized location names (e.g., 'Favorite sushi,' '1 PM Appt,' 'Kids' doc,' etc.) and even list notes about their saved locations, all helping them see exactly the information they choose in the vehicle.

Lexus Insider, a complimentary, opt-in service is also available without a subscription on all Lexus Enform-equipped vehicles. This feature offers in-vehicle audio casts that provide owners access to useful vehicle tips and event information, and insights into exclusive owners' benefits – all designed to further enhance the Lexus experience.

XM – Beyond Radio

Lexus Enform vehicles are factory ready for subscriptions to a variety of innovative XM services. Integrated XM® satellite radio is standard. Additionally, Lexus Enform vehicles feature XM NavTraffic® and XM NavWeather™ services. XM NavTraffic informs the driver of current traffic conditions with real-time traffic displays. When traffic problems are detected the navigation system alerts the driver so that the route can be adjusted. XM NavWeather provides near real-time weather conditions as well as spoken and nav-screen forecasts, both based on official National Weather Service data.

Lexus Enform also provides the platform for XM® Sports and Stocks, which features in-vehicle updates on sports and stocks so drivers can stay connected to their favorite teams and investment data while on the road.

XM Sports provides game results and schedules for up to five personally selected national league sports teams while XM Stocks supplies data for up to 10 personally selected stocks. After inputting their selections, drivers can access the reports through the navigation system, or by using the voice command system, adding a new level of flexibility.

XM services require separate XM subscriptions. The XM Sports and Stocks service is included with an XM® radio subscription. All XM services offer complimentary 90-day trial subscriptions.

Warranty

All new Lexus vehicles come with a 48-month/50,000-mile basic limited warranty with roadside assistance for 48-months/unlimited miles. Powertrain and restraint system coverage is provided for 72 months/70,000 miles. Corrosion perforation protection is covered for 72 months, regardless of mileage.

Toyota's luxury division unveiled its newest sport-luxury compact sedan in 2001, the Lexus IS 300. Sharing its engine with the larger GS 300, the IS was built with rear-wheel drive and carried a 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine that achieved 215 horsepower. The engine operated with VVT-i. During its first season, only a five-speed automatic transmission was offered, but it did incorporate Formula One-inspired E-Shift gear selection on the steering wheel. The wedge-shaped IS body had a semi-fastback roofline and was sharp-edged in design. It was called a ‘condensed high performance stance' by Lexus. A choice of either 16 or 17 inch wheels could be mounted on the IS 300 and front side airbags were installed along with antilock braking and traction control. Available on the vehicle was a limited-slip differential. Inspired by sport watched, a chronograph-style instrument panel was installed in the vehicle. The IS 300 was originally designed for the European market, and is promised to give ‘compelling challenge' to European sport sedans.

Though smaller than the BMW, the Lexus IS300 carried a fairly tight rear seat, though it had a high level of comfort. In Japan the Lexus IS300 was sold as the Toyota Altezza. Introduced in 1999, the IS 300 went on sale in June of 2000. Shortly afterward it appeared as the CART Championship pace car. Along with the IS 300 SportCross, a five-speed manual-transmission version was debuted. The sedan and the little-known SportCross was somewhat publicized by two racing entries in the 2001 Grand-Am Cup North American Street Stock Series. Competitive immediately, the IS scored its first pole position in its fourth race and first race win in the fifth round at Virginia internatiojnal Raceway.

In March of 2003 the IS SportDesign was introduced, basically a cosmetic package equipped with a special grille, tailpipe along with other touches. Sharing its in-line six-cylinder engine with the Supra, the Lexus IS 300 came with rear-wheel drive and an interior that was more sport than luxury. 215 horsepower was produced with the six along with 218 lb-ft of torque that used variable valve timing to broaden its torque curve. The IS 300 also had a two-stage induction system along with a two-way bymass muffler that enhanced breathing and lower noise. Excellent handling was provided by a double wishbone suspension.

When desired, the SportCross and the automatic transmission sedan featured E-Shift steering wheel-mounted shift buttons for finger-tip control over gear shifts. Basically a wagon/crossover version with the same dimensions as the sedan, the IS 300 featured a rear tailgate, a split fold-down rear seatback and fold-down front passenger seatbacks that allowed it to carry either long or odd-shaped items. A rear power outlet and a seatback table were also located in the folding passenger seat.

Wind noise was lowered due to a low 0.29 coefficient of drag, while the interior was quieted with sound-dampening asphalt sheets in the roof. Optional on sedans was a real spoiler, while the SportCross featured a unique spoiler as standard equipment. The IS300 had drill drilled aluminum pedals with rubber pads, supportive height-adjustable seats and stainless steel doorsill scuff plates. 17-inch wheels, low-profile performance-tread tires, auto-dimming side and rearview mirrors, a high-power audio system with both a cassette player and six-disc in-dash CD changer with eight speakers, and High-Intensity Discharge headlights were all standard features.

Optional on the IS300 was eight-way power driver's and passenger seats, heated front seats and a power moonroof. The interior could be outfitted with an optional leather/Alcantara trim package or a full leather-trimmed interior in either ivory or black.

The SportCross offered the Vehicle Stability Control system as an option. This was also optional on the automatic sedan. This feature was helpful in controlling traction while cornering on slippery or dry road surfaces by utilizing throttle intervention. To help limit rear-wheel slip on acceleration the VSC supplements the standard full-range traction control. Brake Assist and Electronic Brake force Distribution was featured on the four-sensor, four-channel anti-lock brake system. To determine if the driver is attempting emergency braking, brake assist is designed to figure this out, along with if the driver has not stepped firmly enough on the brake pedal to engage the ABS. The system supplements the braking power applied until pedal pressure is released.

Pretensioners and height-adjustable anchors are incorporated on the front seatbelts in the Lexus IS 300 to help avoid the forces to the upper torso in a serious frontal collision. The SRS, Supplemental Restraint Systems included dual front airbags, side curtain airbags for the driver and front passenger, and front seat-mounted side airbags. A personal security feature is the speed-sensitive and shift-linked automatic door lock/unlock system.

An optional feature on the Lexus IS 300 was the Lexus Navigation System which used a DVD for map storage. All on one disc, the DVD contains all of the U.S. and the major cities in Canada. High-speed route calculation, multi-route calculation, route preview, a dual-map screen mode and simplified highway junction graphics are functions of the Navigation System. Deployed from the dashboard, the System is easily hidden when not in use. The remote controls for the system are hidden in the center console between the front seats. A dashboard storage compartment with a spring-loaded retractable lid is featured on models not equipped with the Navigation System.

For 2004 all Lexus IS models added a standard maintenance indicator light along with automatic power door locks. In October of 2005 the second generation of IS models were introduced, the IS250 and the IS350.
